Issued by the Royal Mint, this lovely fifty pence coin was struck in 2016 as Team GB prepared for the Olympics in Rio.

In, 2012 the Royal Mint struck the medals that were awarded at London Olympics. The public got creative submitting 29 different ‘sporting’ designs 50p coins. They proved so popular that many of them disappeared from circulation as people collected them rather than spend them. They proved so popular my of them disappeared from circulation.

As Team GB competes, at Rio 2016, a new has been struck to recognise the talent and strength of will of the athletes chosen to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland. They are the men and women who ‘believe in extraordinary’.

The british Olympic Association was formed in 1905, and at first , the association was made up of representatives from just nine sports: fencing, life-saving, cycling, skating, rowing, athletics, rugby football, and archery. Today, it includes members from each of the 35 governing bodies of the Olympic sports. In those first games, the British athletes   secured seven medals and so began a proud tradition.

Great Britain is one of only three countries to have competed at every single Summer and Winter Games and currently sit third in the overall Summer Olympic medal table.
