In 2015 the Royal Mint issued this beautiful Silver Piedfort Proof Two Pound coin,
to commemorative the 100th Anniversary of the First World War,
this coin pays tribute to of our Royal Navy
and the brave people played during this most awful time in our world history.
The history of the Royal Navy is interwoven with that of the United Kingdom,
a display of the nation’s maritime might through the centuries.
As the First World War raged ,the Royal Navy was called upon to play
its part in the global conflict.
At the time the Navy had ruled the waves virtually unchallenged
since the Battle of Trafalgar more than a century before.
The ruling monarch, King George V, was confident of the Navy’s ability
to meet the test before them.
He sent a rousing message to Admiral John Jellicoe,
to be cascaded to the senior naval officers on all posts away from home waters.
These words, so powerful, and reassuring, inspired the edge inscription
for this commemorative gold proof coin. ‘THE SURE SHIELD OF BRITAIN’
perfectly capturing the spirit of the Royal Navy,
and the critical role it played during the First World War.
This coin’s reserve was designed by David Rowlands
and the Obverse by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS.
The coin comes complete with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity,
information, booklet, box and cardboard outer.
In 1282, the coins struck by the Royal Mint were independently
and rigorously checked to determine their quality and fineness,
it is known as the Trial of the Pyx and today over 700 years later, it still takes place.
Every year an independent jury, sworn in by the Queen’s Remembrancer,
ascertains whether the coins made by the Royal Mint are of the correct weight, diameter and composition as required by law.
This means you can rest assured that the coin or coins in your possession are of the highest quality.
