The second Gold Proof 50p coin in the Innovation in Science series is dedicated to Rosalind Franklin, she was a Chemist and X-Ray Crystallographer, whose work was central to understanding of molecular structures of DNA.
This year commemorates the 100th Anniversary of her birth
Although she was also known for her works on viruses, coal and graphite, her work on DNA, was not really appreciated until some years after her death at the age of just 37.
Sadly she was never nominated for a Nobel prize, and her work was a crucial part of the discovery of the structure.
