In 2017 the Royal Mint issued this beautiful Silver Proof Coloured Fifty Pence,  featuring  Peter Rabbit ,

to celebrate one of Great Britain’s  most celebrated authors.

Beatrix Potter  was born in Kensington, London in  1866,

Beatrix Potter, loved to sketch and paint from an early age.

In 1890, Beatrix  bought a rabbit, Benajamin Bouncer followed by Peter in 1893.

Whose first tale was told in an illustrated letter to Noel Moore, later that same year.

In 1901, Beatrix expanded her story about Peter Rabbit into a book.

But unable to find a buyer she published it herself, for her family and friends.

However in 1902, on the advice of an illustrator L.Leslie Brooke.

Frederick Warne  & Co published the very first commercial

edition  of ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’.

Was soon followed by  ‘The tailor of Gloucester’, Squirrel Nutkin, and Benjamin Bunny.

Miss Potter was engaged to be married to Norman Warne,

the youngest of the three publishing brothers at Frederick Warne & Co.

A month after the engagement in 1905, Norman tragically died of Leukaemia.

Heart broken, Beatrix returned to her childhood holiday retreat – the lake district.

She used the income from her published books to buy a farmland including Hill Top Farm.

Its buldings and animals, featured in many of the books she wrote including,

Jemima Puddle-Duck, Tom Kitten and Pig Wig.

It was in the Lake District,,where she met and married a local solicitor William Heelis, they married in 1913.

Miss Potter wrote a total  of 22 tales,  following on from the instant success of  Peter Rabbit.

She was approached by several publishers, who wanted her to produce more expensive formats.

But she was determined to stay true to her original vision of ‘small books for small hands’.

Today, over two million Beatrix Potter books are sold across the across the world every year.
