In 2017 the Royal Mint issued this lovely Brilliant Uncirculated Two Pound coin celebrating the life and times of the wonderful British author Jane Austen.
In 1811 a 35 year old spinster from Hampshire saw her first novel published anonymously. Her tale was about two sisters, crossed in love, several hundred copies copies were sold, but the authors name remained hidden the novel Sense and Sensibility.
Although Jane Austen’s novels were simple romances, in many ways, there were also revolutionary in their treatment of subjects as love, marriage and money. Austen’s men and woman were intellectual equals. The very notion of a woman, speaking her mind, reject a marriage proposal or marry for love, was a largely new concept, in that time. When women was dependent on men for financial security and had very few rights.
While the Napoleonic wars raged across Europe, Austen’s heroines found their conflicts closer to home, in the drawing rooms of Southern England.
Jane Austen’s wrote six main novels, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, my personal favourite Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey.
Jane Austen was a real trail blazer of her time, the spirited verbal fencing between Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, in Pride and Prejudice, was considered rather shocking……
Since the start of the twentieth century Jane Austen’s novel became a global phenomenon, her novals were translated into many different languages, and almost 100 films and televisions adaptions.
Sadly, Jane began feeling unwell in 1816 and she died in 1817, aged just 41 years of age. The majority of Biographers rely on Dr Vincent Cope’s 1964 retrospective diagnosis and list her cause of death as Addison’s disease, although her final illness has also been described as resulting from Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
A tragic end of a wonderful woman, who dreamed of a world, where woman were equal to men. Sadly, even in the 21st century, in some parts of the world, this is still not the case.
This fitting tribute of this lovely Two pound , comes sealed in original packaging.
