In July 2012. London hosted the Olympic Games, the first time in over 60 years.
To celebrate this momentous event in sporting history, the Royal Mint struck a series of four silver proof five pound coins, counting down to the games.
The first coin was issued in 2009, with three years to go, the coin depicts Swimming,
the number 3 overlaid and the Olympic Logo.
The second coin was issued in 2010, two years to go, the coin depicts Athletics,
with the number 2 overlaid and the Olympic Logo
The third coin in the series was issued in 2011, one year to go, the coin depicts Cycling
and is overlaid with the number 1 and the Olympic Logo.
The final coin was issued in 2012, the Olympic year, the coin depicts, three Olympic winners standing on a podium, emblazoned with the Olympic Logo.
The coin represents, the end of the countdown and heralds the arrival of the Games to London.
Each silver proof five pound coin, comes complete with it’s own Certificate of Authenticity. All the coins are presented in a Union Jack themed box.
