IN 1509 ENGLAND WAS VULNERABLE TO ATTACK FROM THE FRENCH SHIPS, SO KING HENRY VIII WAS DETERMINED TO BUILD A STRONG DEFENCE AND GAIN SUPREMACY OVER THE SEAS. MARY WAS ONE OF THE SHIPS BUILT AND WAS AMONG A FAVOURITE OF KING HENRY’S, NAMED AFTER HIS SISTER OR POSSIBLY THE VIRGIN MARY. THE MARY ROSE WAS THE PRIDE OF THE ROYAL NAVY.

THE TERM ‘PIEDFORT’, DERIVED FROM THE FRENCH LANGUAGE MEANING ‘FOOT’ AND ‘STRONG’. THE  COIN  IS DOUBLE THE NORMAL THICKNESS AND WEIGHT OF A
