In 2008 the Royal Mint issued this lovely Piedfort Silver Proof Shield of Arms one pound coin, this coin was designed by Matthew Dent.
The design was originally planned of our decimal coinage, fifty pence down to one pence.
When these coins were put together, they made an image of the Royal Arms.
Although there were no plans to issue a new design for the pound coin Matthew pointed out that
‘heraldry has been the basis of coinage design in Britain for hundred’s of years’
This lovely Silver Proof coin is twice the thickness of a standard coin,
so it is nice and chunky
The obverse features HM Queen Elizabeth , designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.
The coin comes complete with Certificate of Authenticity and box.
