Description

In 2004 the Royal Mint issued a series of Silver Proof Five Pound coins,

on behalf of Jersey, the ‘History of the Royal Navy’.

This coins features Admiral John Arbuthnot Fisher,

often referred to as the greatest Royal Navy Admiral since Nelson.

Born in January 1841, in Ceylon, into a military family, ‘Jacky’ Fisher joined the

Royal Navy at the age of thirteen, joining HMS Victory  at Portsmouth.

His naval career included active service  during the Crimean War 1859-60 and at Alexandria in 1882.

He was promoted to captain at the age of 33 and then went on to become

Third Lord Sea Lord and Controller of the Navy in 1892, with a seat on the Admiralty Board,

before being appointed First Sea Lord in 1904.

He improved efficiency at the dockyards, pushed for development of submarines,

and emphasised the need for bigger and more powerful battleships.
