Description

In 2004 the Royal Mint issued a series of Silver Proof Five Pound coins.

On behalf of Jersey, celebrating the ‘History of the Royal Navy’.

This lovely coin features  the most famous ship

in British Naval history, HMS Victory.

Nelson’s flag ship at the Battle of Trafalgar.

HMS Victory is the oldest commissioned ship in the world.

She was designed by Thomas Slade and was launched in 1765.

She was not commissioned until 1778, which meant her timbers were well seasoned.

She was First Rate, the most powerful ship of the her day.

She was in service for 40 years between 1778 and 1812.

She had three gun decks which amounted to one hundred guns in total.

She was involved in several battles, such as Ushant, St Vincent

and of course the Battle of Trafalgar.

HMS Victory now resides in Portsmouth since 1922.

She attracts over 350,000 visitors a year.
