In 2004 the Royal Mint issued a series of Silver Proof Five Pound coins
on behalf of Guernsey, celebrating the ‘History of the Royal Navy’.
This beautiful coin depicts HMS Invincible, she was designed by Armstrong Whitworth in 1907
and built on the Tyne. She was launched in 1909, with eight 12 inch guns
and a top speed of in excess of 25 knots. Designed to out run the heavier and
slower enemy vessels, she frst saw action in 1914 at the battles of Heligoland Bigh
t and the Falkland Islands. Invincible the flag ship of Rear Admiral Sir Horace Hood,
the ship lead the fleet into the Battle of Jutland.
Tragically, coming under tremendous fire from the German fleet
HMS Invincible sank in matter of seconds having split in two
with the loss of all but 6 of her crew of 1026 men.
