Description

In 2003 the Royal Mint issued a series of Silver Proof Five pound coins on behalf of Guernsey, celebrating the ‘History of the Royal Navy’.

This coin features ‘Viscount Horatio Nelson’ one of Britain’s most famous historical figures.

Horatio Nelson was a captain by the time he was twenty, and gained experience in active service,

in the West Indies, the Baltic and Canada.

He was knighted after his victory at Cape Vincent in 1797,

and went on to other notable victories, at the Battle of the Nile, in 1798

and the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801.

Before taking the helm of the most famous of warships ‘HMS Victory’.

 His most famous battle was of course the Battle of Trafalgar,

where he triumphed over Napoleon.

He was fatally injured injured and died on the deck of the ship.

HMS Victory carried his body home and his funeral

was held at St Paul’s Cathedral, following a grand state funeral.
