In 2003 the Royal mint issued this special full Gold Proof Sovereign
The history of the sovereign, can be traced back to the fifteenth century,
four years after the Battle of Bosworth.
This decisive battle of the War of the Roses.
The new Tudor King Henry VII celebrated the stability of his realm with
‘A new Coin of Gold’
The Sovereign was named to honour the king.
The Sovereign a statement of wealth and strength.
Of the new Tudor dynasty the defining feature of this magnificent coin
was a portrait of England’s monarch.
Since then the iconic image of St George and dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci,
has been used on all but a handful of Sovereigns is recognised worldwide.
In 1282, the coins struck by the Royal Mint were independently
and rigorously checked to determine their quality and fineness,
it is known as the Trial of the Pyx and today over 700 years later, it still takes place.
Every year an independent jury, sworn in by the Queen’s Remembrancer,
ascertains whether the coins made by the Royal Mint are of the correct weight,
diameter and composition as required by law.
This means you can rest assured that the coin or coins in your possession are of the highest quality.
