In 2003 the Royal Mint issued a series of Silver Proof Five pound coins,
on behalf of Alderney to celebrate the history of our Royal Navy.
This Silver Proof coin depicts Alfred the Great, born in Wantage, Berkshire in 849.
Alfred was the fifth son of Aethelwulf King of the West Saxons.
His military skills were first applied in 871 when he fought several battles against the Danes.
After the death of his brother King Aethelred I, Alfred became King of Wessex.
His on going battles with the Vikings were successful as a result of the
introduction of military reforms, such as strengthening of forts and garrisons
and the formation of the Royal Navy.
The ships were built according to King Alfred ‘s design.
Alfred’s achievements in military, political,
and educational brought a degree of stability to England.
