Built at Portsmouth, the Mary Rose was Henry VIII’s flag ship, and was one of the first purpose built warship, she carried 200 sailors, 185 soldiers and 30 gunners.
In 1536 she underwent a major refurbishment, emerging with 91 guns. In the summer of 1545 a French force of 235 troopships mounted an invasion of Portsmouth, they met 60 English fleet, amongst them was the Mary Rose. On the 19th July 1545 battle commenced, the Mary Rose, heeled, flooded and sank. A castastrophe reputedly witnessed by Henry VIII himself.
In 1970 the wreck of the Mary Rose was positively identified. Twelve years later, her remains were bought to the service and they were put on display at Portsmouth Naval Base.
