REPRESENTATION OF THE PEOPLE ACT 2018 50P COIN PACK

£20.00

Issued by the Royal Mint this Brilliant Uncirculated 50p coin pack  celebrates the  100th Anniversary  of the 1918 Representation of the People Act. This Act changed the voting system in the United Kingdom forever.

In 1914 at the outbreak of the First World War, the right to vote was limited to 60% of male householders over the age of 21. The Suffragette Movement was also kicking up a fuss about women’s voting rights.

The one thing that changed the mood of the nation as regards voting rights, came when war broke out, our brave young men who went to war in defence of  our great nation, however they were denied the right to vote. Our young women, kept the country running, taking job’s usually done by men, were also denied a vote

Something, had to change and Parliament recognised that voting reform had to had

The Representation of the People Act 1918 extended voting rights to men aged 19 or over on military service, all men over 21 and some women ‘of property’ over 30; it also paved the way for equal representation which followed in 1928.

This Act triggered 100 years of progress and change. Reform came at a time, when after the tragic loss of so many lives in the First World War, life in Britain was being rebuilt, and this Act gave us a new and fairer Britain for us all.
