This stunning 5oz Silver Proof coin issued by the Royal Mint to commemorate the First World War Armistice in 1918 – an agreement between the Allies and Germany which ended the war in Europe and saw the beginning of negotiations that finally resulted in peace.
Signed on ‘the eleventh hour of the eleventh month’ the Armistice was the result of the German government asking the US President Woodrow Wilson to broker a ceasefire. A deteriorating military situation and rapidly collapsing political system finally forced Germany to seek negotiations.
The inscription on the coin design is from a poem ‘Strange Meeting’ by Wilfred Owen, who wrote some of the most powerful poems of the First World War. His world ‘The truth untold the pity of war’, vividly describes the experiences of the soldiers on the Western Front.
Strange Meeting is a poem about reconciliation. Two soldiers meet up in an imagined Hell, the first having killed the second in battle. Their moving dialogue is one of the most poignant in modern war poetry.
Wilfred Owen fought and died in World War one, being fatally wounded just a week before the war ended in May 1918. This terrible war where millions gave there lives, ‘Least we forget’.
